12 volt solar panels are designed to collect the sun's rays and generate enough energy to power applications such residential grid tie systems, large commercial grid tie systems, water pumping systems, high voltage stand alone systems, RV systems and 12 volt systems. Some outdoor lights are powered with this level of voltage as well.
One of the best ways to understand if these are the best devices for a particular use is to find out the rating on the application you wish to power using solar. Match it to the panels or battery system that qualifies.
Find out exactly what it is that makes up the device. For example, most of these panels include a polycrystalline cell panel, metal conduit that helps keep animals and elements out around the wires, and a strong mounting bracket that will help to keep the device in position for as long as it needs to be.
One of the important things to know about 12 volt solar panels and the chargers that accompany them is that “feeder” solar panels are unable to re-charge or refurbish a battery that has already been completely depleted. A better expectation of these items is to simply expect that they will replenish the same amount of energy that was used during the course of a normal day, or other short period.
Look into building or purchasing a charge regulator kit. At its most basic, this system regulates the charging of batteries from photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. When compared with a system that connects directly to a PV battery, regulating the charge extends the life of rechargeable batteries far beyond that of a direct connection.
Many people desire to include 12 volt solar panels on each feeder. This is often recommended because it takes away the step of having to remove the batteries when they need to be charged. In addition to this, it also simply helps to ensure that the batteries being used will last for a longer period of time.
The Internet offers another great way to figure out just how many volts/watts are needed to power your specific applications. A simple search using the terms “solar calculator” will return many different types of these calculators. They are designed to take your input and calculate any number of things including:
• The size of solar power system needed
• How much the system will cost
• Which incentives and/or rebates your project qualifies for
• Return on investment amount
• Carbon emissions – the amount of carbon dioxide that is released as compared with the amount of electricity used
• How many trees would need to be planted each year to offset your personal carbon emissions
12 volt solar panels can also power communication equipment and mobile electronics, re-charge batteries, plus reduce the logistic challenges of battery power. 12 volt systems can be used as an alternate power generator for charging lead-acid, Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries.
