Awesome Video Showing Wind Turbine Construction
Check out this cool video of gigantic wind turbine being erected outside of Boulder, Colorado:
Large Wind Generator Construction Video
Scroll about 3/4 the way down the page.
First and foremost you’ll notice the scale. The men and trucks working on the turbine look like ants. The 1.5 Mega Watt generator was just purchased by the Department of Energy in conjunction with the the National Wind Technology Center.
The purpose of the giant generator is threefold:
- Produce energy for the Wind Technology Center to consume.
- Sell excess energy back to the grid.
- Provide a research model for scientists at the center.
The generator is made by GE, stand about 240 feet high at the hub, or the center of the rotor. The blades have a diameter of 230 feet. Which means total height, with a rotor blade sticking straight up, is about 355 feet! Hard to get a grip on just how large these units are.
Having lived in that part of the country for many years I can attest to its credentials as a wind center. Especially during the spring and fall. If the wind blew at 12 mph all day this unit would generate enough to power about 700 homes. And thats ONE unit.
