Cool New Map Shows Just How Much Solar We Would Need to Power the World

Have you ever wondering just how much solar we would need to power the world?  Well I certainly have.  And a new mapping project from Land Art Generator sought to figure out, in terms of land area, just how much would be necessary to meet the world’s power needs.

The first thing that may strike you is the fact that the area is so SMALL.  It looks like a couple pimples of solar on the face of our dear planet could power the whole place.  The map takes into account the estimates of consumption in 2030, so its not like we would outgrow it right away.

Of course there are plenty of reasons why this will never happen.  Cost is primarily the reason, plus there are practicalities to talk about.  Having 100% of our power will never be a realistic possibility until we have storage of power.  After all we can’t have our industries and businesses, let alone our homes, shut down when it is dark or cloudy.

Still the exercise is valid thinking about just how much energy strikes our earth’s surface and then finding a way to put that into our power system to meet our needs.  Pretty cool right?
