Customer Question: Heating With Solar
Q: I have a porch that was converted to a room off the left side of my house. The room has electricity but it doesn’t have heat or AC…Its very cold in the winter and hot in the summer. I have a plug in electric heater that I use in the winter and it heats the room nicely but its expensive to run. Could you please suggest a kit that would work with this? If its around 40 degrees outside, the room is chilly around 58 degrees. The current heater is a stand alone and it can run on 600w or 900w or both of them on together. – Theresa, NJ
A: Hi Theresa, we’d love to help you. Its tough when trying to generate heat with electricity. That 600 or 900 w heater takes a lot of juice as you know. There is no easy solution for keeping up with that kind of power. To generate what is needed you would need about 1400W of solar power, which would cost a few thousand dollars. The most efficient way to heat is with gas heaters, but of course this isn’t very green. But a grid tied solar power system would take a bite out that power bill without question.
