Our Home System Overview, Part 1
We get a lot of calls from people who are looking to go green and are curious about solar power and living off grid. I thought I’d take some time to describe our system and how it works. Let’s start with the some background on the area.
No Grid to Be Found
This neighborhood is what you would call a work in progress. The developer built a ski hill, dammed the river to make a lake, subdivided the area, built some roads, and then went broke. So what’s wrong with that? Nothing, except he went broke before he could install utilities in the residential area.
But the area was desirable enough that people still wanted to live here. So they used their ingenuity and started bulding off grid homes. Using solar, wind, and propane we have been able to build a nice comfortable home while consuming about 10% of the national average for power and water.
In the coming posts I’ll discuss our power system, water system, heat, and general lifestyle considerations that allow us to do this.
