Like most anything, portable solar power has several advantages as well as some disadvantages. For anyone hoping to use a portable system, first consider the advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages are expected:
• Environmentally friendly – Because portable solar energy can take the place of things like batteries, it is certainly an advantage to use these in order to be able to avoid having to create refuse from batteries.
• Cheaper – Although the initial purchase is sure to be an investment, those who stick with their solar energy systems are sure to save money in the long run. For those who use this kind of energy in their homes, it can take more than 10 years to see a return on investment. But, those who use portable solar power are more likely to see a return on investment much sooner - mostly because the initial investment isn’t nearly as large. The disadvantages are obvious:
• Heavy – Even though some of these can be quite light, there are others that can weigh several pounds. Even if a system seems light, for the hiker trekking hundreds of miles (or even 20), even a little bit of weight starts to take a toll pretty fast.
• Bulky – This is not true for all solar power systems. But they can be bulky and hard to fit into a backpack or some other small place.
After all is said and done, portable solar power is probably a good purchase, but this may vary depending on each person’s needs. There are great foldable and flexible thin film products currently available that remove most of the disadvantages.
