Having
a residential solar power system is a big decision that can cost thousands
of dollars. In order to ensure that the proper decision is being made,
the homeowner should look into what kind of system he would most like
to have. There are three main types:
• Real time solar power – This type of residential solar
power system works only when the sun is out. It collects all of the
ultraviolet rays from the sun’s energy, but does little else
afterwards. While this energy can be used just fine while the sun
is shining, as soon as the sun sets, this system is not able to be
used either.
• Battery – This type of system is much more financially
sound, although the initial cost can cost much more. These systems
are nice simply because the excess energy that is being collected
does not need to be used immediately. Instead, the energy is moved
into a battery. Having the extra energy in a battery allows the homeowner
to have access to the power all night long, as long as there is enough
in the reserve.
• Grid – Many people don’t exactly use the solar
energy that their panels collect, but instead essentially sell that
energy to the local power company. This is done by tying the solar
energy to the electrical grid. One of the favorite pastimes of people
with these kinds of systems is to watch their meter actually turn
backwards as the energy produced is filtered into the grid.
Each of these choices of residential solar power systems has advantages
and disadvantages but a careful study of them can help a potential
buyer better understand what he needs for his home.
