Solar energy is a simple, yet complicated means of providing electricity to a home, even though using a solar collector is quite easy.
Using these systems is not hard because there is little or no maintenance required, but understanding each facet of the system is certainly something that can be much more difficult.
Even though a person who uses solar energy may not need to know everything about his solar collector, he should understand at least a few things:
• They are delicate – The solar collector is not something that a person simply throws up on the roof and expects to work. These items are typically not flexible (although they can be) and they must fit together firmly in order to best conduce electricity.
• Silicon is the key – Understanding every aspect of how the sun’s energy is transformed into electricity may take a PhD to truly understand, but it is good to understand that it is silicon that helps this transition take place. Without silicon in solar panels, it would be difficult or impossible to create solar electricity.
• Size maters – This size, however, does not only refer to the size of the solar collector itself, but it also refers to the amount of energy which the unit can collect and convert. Typically, the larger the panel, the more electricity there is that can be produced.
But, this is not always the case. Because there has been a bevy of breakthroughs concerning solar energy in recent years, the solar collectors are much more efficient than they were a decade ago. This means that a 3x5 solar panels may be able to work as effectively now as a 5x10 solar panel would have worked not too long ago.
These may not be the only aspects of a solar collector that should be understood, but they are solid, basic starting points.
