Solar energy panels are the parts of a solar system that collect the sunlight and convert it into power. The panels are the most crucial part of solar energy – without them, nothing would happen. Panels are available in a variety of different shapes and styles. Which panels a home might need or want is dependent on building size, budget and energy needs.
One of the biggest issues about solar energy panels has been their lack of efficiency. Because they take in a lot of sunlight and only convert a fraction of that to energy, many people think they're not worth the expense of purchasing and installing a solar system in their homes. Recent years have pushed energy efficiency to the top of worldwide issues, in turn driving advances in solar technology. As a result, better panels are being made. Solar energy panels of today are much more efficient and cost effective than their ancestors.
The letters “PV” are often used when referring to these panels. The letters stand for photovoltaic. Photo means light and voltaic means electricity. It is the PV that is able to take the energy and convert it into direct current electricity. The largest advantage of PV is the fact that it is clean and creates absolutely no pollution. Additionally, there is little to no maintenance required.
While the solar energy panels are able to gather a lot of energy in those places where there is a lot of sunlight throughout the year, often times this still is not quite enough to keep a large home running on solar energy alone.
In these cases a process called net metering is employed. Net metering occurs when a home with solar energy panels hooks up its system to the local electrical power grid. Instead of using the solar electricity that the home is collecting and creating, the homeowner actually is able to pump this electricity into the local grid. When this occurs, the electrical company gives credits to the homeowner. Doing this allows for the homeowner to do his part in conserving fossil fuel energy, but also lets him be assured that a couple of cloudy days won’t cripple the home for lack of electricity.
Those who choose to employ their solar energy panels in another way often will connect the system to a battery where excess energy can be stored. That means that even when the sun goes down in the evening, the home can have its electrical needs met thanks to the reserve battery supply where all the extra (if there is any) energy is stored throughout the day. One of the biggest advantages to such a system is the fact that if there is a grid blackout, the home that has a battery back-up for their solar power will not be affected. For many people, this is one of the main reasons for choosing this kind of a system.
