There are two main types of solar panels: homes and business may use either photovoltaic panels which are used for electricity, or panels used for solar water heating.

Photovoltaic solar panels are the type that most people think of when they think of solar panels. They are the black structures that are often mounted to south-facing roof-tops. They are the small cells atop solar garden lighting.

Panels used for solar water heating just as effectively utilize the sun’s light, but they do so in a different way. There are two different types of these solar panels: homes may have either have ones which water is pumped through and heated directly (direct systems), or ones which heat a liquid other than water which, in turn, heats the water (indirect systems). Both can be effective means of harnessing the sun’s power.

So, when choosing solar panels, home models specific for electricity and ones specific for heating water should be looked at.
