It is best to begin with an explanation of the terms. Simply put, photo-voltaic means “light-electricity,” which is exactly what it is. Solar photovoltaic energy is a way of transferring sunlight into electricity.
This energy is created through solar panels. These panels are created from semiconductors, such as silicon. The semiconductors absorb the rays of the sun and create electricity from it. Within the panels, a direct current is created, known as DC energy. The addition of an inverter to the system allows the DC to be converted to AC, or an alternating current.
AC is a more useable energy form which can be harnessed for everything from speakers to microwaves to household lighting. The idea is that by using this natural resource, humans can power homes, RVs, cabins, boats, and gadgets for free and without any costs to the environment.
The standard form of creating energy, on the other hand, involves the burning of fossil fuels. These exist in limited supply, meaning they can’t be relied upon forever. They also increase the amount of greenhouse gases within the atmosphere.
The current consensus of the scientific community is that a human-caused excess of these gases is a major contributor to global warming. This in turn is linked to the melting of glaciers and rising sea levels. The disastrous effects of it are hitting man an animal alike.
Of course, free solar energy is a bit of an illusion in itself. This is because the materials needed to produce the energy will cost money. In addition to this, most people must pay for the installation. Currently, the solar panels and other materials needed to produce photovoltaic energy are considered quite costly by the average person.
A primary reason for this is has been that the demand for them is not high enough. This makes the initial start up cost for a solar powered home a bit pricey. For a small solar powered home it is estimated to cost around $30,000 just to get started.
However, the popularity of solar energy is known to be on the rise. Hope remains that costs will go down due to the recent surge of environmentally-conscious consumers. In addition to this, scientific focus on the matter has lead to much technological advancement. As the details of solar power become better understood, ways to more efficiently harness it also become available. This in turn can make the cost very affordable.
For now, it is good to remember that, while initial costs are high, in the long run money will be saved. Solar energy is free energy. So once the system is set up, there is no need to worry about a monthly electricity bill.
