Many people assume that the technology behind a solar water heater system if relatively new. After all, the majority of homes in the United States heat their water with gas. But the truth is, solar heaters were patented in the United States back in 1891, over a century ago.

One would think that in over a century, the design of solar hot water systems would have been perfected. But the truth is, these heaters went out of fashion. Yes, in the beginning, they very popular, and many people used them to heat their water. But then natural gas became less expensive, and people turned to it, instead.

If only people of yesteryear knew how relatively little natural gas and other nonrenewable resources we truly have. If only they had know that future generations could face the depletion of such natural resources, maybe all homes would have and use a solar hot water system, today. Perhaps the issued of climate change would not even exist – if everyone used clean, renewable energy, like that of the sun, the world would be a better place.
